Anina E. Hathaway is a painter, photographer, and drawer, as well as a graphic artist. She experiences an enhanced sense of vision due to her hearing loss, which was caused by a premature birth. Born into a hearing family, Anina learned American Sign Language, but she is usually able to understand people through a combination of hearing aids and reading lips, and she learned to speak well through speech therapy. She also experiences life through mixed communication with the hearing world as well as the deaf world, a duality that has shaped her outlook and that is often expressed in her work.
Anina’s abstract expressionist paintings carry an intensity inspired by her emotions. In contrast, her photographs explore the aesthetics of landscapes and employ black and white images to evoke a reminiscence about the past. She has shown her works in the Southwest and Midwest United States, as well as internationally. She lives in Boulder, Colorado.
